SEO (Search Engine Optimization), ever wondered why your blog\website is not being crawled by Google, Yahoo or any other search engines? Or the new content on the blog is not showing in the search result?
Well, there is definitely a reason for that to happen. And the reason could be SEO. Although you have valuable content on your site, there are no visitors. Is that the issue? Then, you are reading the right post.
I’m going to be taking an example of a Wordpress blog and sharing some SEO thoughts:
- How to Search optimize your Wordpress?
Keep it simple – Search engines look at the site info by looking at the URL structure. Make sure your URL structure is simple and easy to understand. I’ve written a detailed post on how to change permalink settings in wordpress. Once you change your wordpress Permalink (URL) settings, you should automatically see your info on search engines. (Here is some advice from india’s top blogger amit – http://www.labnol.org/internet/wordpress-permalinks-structure/12633/)
- Use Plugins BUT not excessively.
I had a friend who recently started blogging. Out of curiosity, he added all sorts of SEO plugings available. What happened next? Don’t ask! His page rank dipped from a 2 to 0.Ever heard of the phrase, curiosity killed the cat? Yeah, now you do!
- Allow Search engines to crawl your site using wordpress robots.txt.
When we first install wordpress, you’d get an option to setup basic wordpress SEO, weather allow search engines to see\crawl your site or NOT. If you were paranoid and chose not to be indexed by search engines, please change the settings by visiting wp-admin –> Settings. It is a good thing to get indexed
!
- Use the right XML sitemap tool
Again, there are lots of XML sitemap submission plugins for wordpress, choosing the right one is the best thing. I’d recommend using ‘XML sitemap generator’ for wordpress.
Above discussed are some of the basic Wordpress SEO tricks. Stay tuned for more in the future
